Intelligent Ward Storage for Indian Hospitals

The RIFE Smart Storage Locker brings automated, access-controlled storage to hospital wards, nursing stations, ICUs and clinical departments. Designed for the full range of ward-level storage needs — from narcotics and controlled substances to lab samples, medical supplies and staff personal items — in a single, scalable, IoT-connected locker system.

Every access is authenticated, logged and traceable. Every compartment is monitored in real time. Every discrepancy triggers an instant alert. This is the storage infrastructure that NABH-accredited Indian hospitals need — and that most are still managing with keys and paper registers.

What Can Be Stored

💊 Narcotics & Controlled Substances

Schedule H, H1 and X medications require dual-authentication, tamper-evident storage with a complete dispensing audit trail. The RIFE Smart Storage Locker provides dedicated controlled substance compartments with role-based access, dual-lock capability and automatic reconciliation reporting — meeting NABH MMU and Indian pharmacy regulatory requirements without manual registers.

🧪 Lab Samples

Blood samples, urine samples, tissue specimens and other lab samples collected on the ward need secure, organised interim storage before transport to the laboratory. Dedicated lab sample compartments with temperature monitoring options ensure sample integrity and chain of custody from collection to lab receipt.

🩺 Medical Supplies & Consumables

High-value ward consumables — IV lines, catheters, dressings, monitoring electrodes — stored in access-controlled compartments with automatic inventory tracking. When stock falls below minimum, the system generates an automatic reorder alert — eliminating stockouts of critical ward supplies.

📱 Mobile Devices & Equipment

Tablets, handheld scanners, mobile phones and small clinical devices stored securely with optional built-in charging. Staff check out devices using their ID credential — every device movement is logged, eliminating the “who has the tablet?” problem that plagues busy wards.

👤 Staff Personal Storage

Secure personal item storage for nursing and clinical staff near the work area — phones, wallets, keys — without requiring staff to travel to a distant changing room during shifts.

Key Features

  • Multi-factor authentication: QR code, PIN, RFID badge or biometric — configurable per compartment type and security requirement
  • Role-based access control: Nurses, pharmacists, managers and administrators each have access only to the compartments relevant to their role
  • Real-time alerts: Instant SMS, email or push notification for unauthorised access attempts, overdue returns and low stock
  • Complete audit trail: Every access event logged with user identity, timestamp and item — exportable for NABH compliance reporting
  • IoT cloud management: Monitor all lockers across wards, floors and campuses from a single dashboard
  • Scalable modular design: Start with one unit, expand to a network of lockers across the hospital as requirements grow
  • LED compartment indicators: Green/red LED on each compartment shows availability at a glance — as visible in the image
  • Touchscreen interface: Intuitive touchscreen with QR code scanner for fast, easy access
  • Tamper detection: Instant alert if any compartment is forced or accessed without authentication
  • Optional temperature monitoring: For lab samples and temperature-sensitive medications
  • Optional built-in charging: USB-C ports inside device storage compartments

How It Works

  1. Authenticate: Staff scans QR code, enters PIN or taps RFID badge at the touchscreen
  2. Select compartment: System displays available compartments relevant to the staff member’s role and access level
  3. Compartment opens: Assigned compartment releases. Access is logged with user identity and timestamp
  4. Store or retrieve: Staff stores or retrieves item. LED indicator updates to reflect compartment status
  5. Alert triggered if needed: If item not returned within defined time, manager receives automatic alert

NABH Compliance Support

The RIFE Smart Storage Locker directly supports NABH accreditation requirements across multiple chapters:

  • MMU (Medication Management): Secure, access-controlled storage for controlled substances with complete dispensing audit trail
  • ICNC (Infection Control): Sealed, easy-clean surfaces. Reduces open shelf storage that accumulates contamination
  • FMS (Facility Management): Organised, accountable storage reduces clutter and supports a safe ward environment
  • QPS (Quality & Patient Safety): Automated documentation reduces manual record-keeping errors

Deployment Scenarios

  • Nursing station: Central ward locker for medications, supplies and mobile devices — accessible to the full nursing team with role-based permissions
  • ICU bedside: Compact locker at each ICU bay for controlled substances and critical care consumables
  • OT corridor: Pre-procedure supply and narcotic storage adjacent to operating theatres
  • Laboratory reception: Secure sample drop-off and interim storage before processing
  • Emergency department: Fast-access controlled substance and supply storage for ED nursing teams
