A telemedicine cart is a configured clinical workstation. Its suitability depends on the consultation type, installed technology, hospital network, physical route, infection-control practice and support model.
1. Define the consultation
- Identify departments, patient positions and remote specialist tasks.
- Separate general video consultation from detailed imaging or device-assisted examination.
- List required peripherals: electronic stethoscope, examination camera, vital-sign monitor or ultrasound.
- Document privacy, consent and recording requirements.
2. Video, audio and display
Choose camera resolution, optical zoom, field of view and low-light performance from real clinical tasks. Test echo cancellation, microphone range and speaker clarity in the intended room. Select display size and single- or dual-screen layout around the software workflow.
3. Power and connectivity
- Calculate runtime from the complete configured load during continuous video use.
- Test charging time, battery health reporting and replacement.
- Validate Wi-Fi roaming along the cart’s actual route and retain wired Ethernet where required.
- Define behaviour during network loss and consultation recovery.
4. Mobility and infection prevention
Conduct loaded trials through doors, lifts and bedside spaces. Check height range, camera positioning, steering, stability, cable containment, cleanability and chemical compatibility. Peripherals need secure, cleanable holders.
5. Security and serviceability
Use managed devices, encryption, automatic screen lock and role-based authentication. Confirm patching, remote support, peripheral drivers, spare parts and ownership between clinical engineering and IT.
Acceptance test: complete a real end-to-end consultation at the most difficult location, using every required peripheral and the intended hospital network.
