Choosing the wrong charging cart for a hospital environment is a costly mistake. Wrong capacity, inadequate ventilation, or missing security features can mean devices overheat, circuits trip, or hardware goes missing. This guide covers every decision point specific to healthcare device fleets.

1. Cart vs Cabinet vs Locker

Mobile Charging Trolley: Best for shared ward fleets, nursing rounds, and training rooms. Full mobility with castors and brakes. Key lock. 12–40 devices.

Fixed Charging Cabinet: Best for nursing stations and reception where devices always return to the same point. Freestanding or wall-adjacent. Key lock.

Wall-Mounted Station: Best for small tablet fleets where floor space is limited. Fixed installation. Key lock.

Smart Locker: Best where controlled issue/return and audit trail are required. RFID or facial recognition access.


2. Laptop vs Tablet Charging

  • Power draw: Laptops draw 45–90W per device; tablets draw 10–20W. A 40-device laptop cart needs significantly more electrical capacity.
  • Slot size: Look for adjustable ABS dividers accommodating 10" tablets to 15.6" laptops in the same unit.
  • Adapter type: Most hospital laptops use AC barrel or USB-C. Tablets may use USB-C or Lightning. Confirm before specifying.

3. Capacity Selection

  • 10–12 devices: Small ward or consultation room — wall station or compact cabinet.
  • 20–30 devices: Mid-size ward or OPD — RLAB30 or 12-Bay Cabinet.
  • 32–40 devices: Large ward, training room, medical college — CP2 or RLAB40.

Always specify 10–20% more capacity than your current fleet to accommodate future additions.


4. AC Adapters vs USB-C

AC adapter carts include an internal PDU with individual AC sockets. Each device uses its own OEM charger — universal, works with any brand.

USB-C carts use built-in USB-C ports. Suitable for modern tablets and Chromebooks but will not charge older laptops requiring AC adapters.

Recommendation for mixed hospital fleets: Specify AC adapter carts for maximum compatibility.


5. Ventilation

Simultaneous charging of 30–40 devices generates significant heat. Without ventilation, battery temperatures rise, lifespan degrades, and devices may refuse to charge above a temperature threshold.

  • Passive ventilation slots — minimum requirement
  • Active cooling fan — required for 20+ devices charging simultaneously
  • Rear electrical access panel — allows PDU heat to dissipate

6. Timer & Sequencer

A timer/sequencer staggers device charging start times to prevent simultaneous inrush current from tripping hospital circuits.

You need one if: charging 30+ devices on a shared circuit, or your facilities team has flagged overload concerns.

Available on the CP2 series. Optional timer add-on available for RLAB series.


7. Security

  • Key lock (standard): Dual-key with front user access and rear IT access — suitable for most shared fleets.
  • RFID access: Select models — for high-value fleets or where key management is a problem.
  • Smart locker with audit trail: Where individual accountability for device issue/return is required.

8. Device Slot Compatibility

Most Rife Medical carts accommodate 10" tablets to 15.6" laptops with adjustable ABS dividers. Confirm slot depth accommodates devices in protective cases. iPad Pro 12.9" and large-format tablets require wider slots — verify before ordering.


9. Mobility & Castors

  • 6" castors minimum for smooth movement across clinical floors and door thresholds
  • At least two locking brakes required
  • A 40-device laptop cart fully loaded can weigh 80–120kg — confirm safe single-person operation

10. Cable Organisation

Look for internal cable routing channels per slot, rear PDU access panel separating power cables from device storage, and sufficient cable length to allow device removal without disconnecting.


11. Cleaning & Maintenance

Powder-coated steel surfaces can be wiped with standard hospital cleaning agents. ABS dividers are removable for separate cleaning. Confirm the supplier provides local service support and spare parts.

12. Hospital IT Workflow

  • Will devices be MDM-enrolled before deployment? IT staff need cart access for initial setup.
  • Are devices shared anonymously or assigned to specific staff? Anonymous sharing suits trolleys; assigned devices suit smart lockers.
  • What is the shift handover process? Cart location and access must support device return at shift end.
