Laboratory Bench & Pipetting Ergonomics

Bench height, forearm position, reach, stool height and movement for repetitive laboratory tasks.

Laboratory work combines precision hand activity with long periods at benches that are often fixed in height. The ergonomic challenge is to place the hands close to elbow level while keeping the neck, shoulders and lower back out of sustained end-range positions.

Bench height determines shoulder load

When the bench is too high, the shoulders elevate and the wrists may deviate. When it is too low, the user flexes the trunk and neck. Adjustable seating is often the easiest way to match the body to a fixed bench, but only when the feet are supported.

Bring the sample closer

Pipettes, trays and instruments should be arranged so high-frequency tasks stay inside a compact reach zone. Repetitive reaching is often more important than the nominal shape of the chair.

Choose between mobility and support

RSL is useful where the technician moves frequently between stations. R400 adds back support for longer seated tasks. RSB provides the height and footring needed for elevated benches. R801 may suit precision technical work where a movable support is valuable.

Alternate task types

Long runs of identical pipetting or microscope work should be broken up where workflow allows. Changing task, posture and visual distance is a practical way to reduce static loading.
