Workstation Height, Foot Support & Stool Setup

Why stool height cannot be selected correctly without considering the work surface and the feet.

Stool height is not a number in isolation. The right setup is the relationship between the seat, feet, work surface, visual target and hand position. A technically excellent stool can become uncomfortable when one of these relationships is wrong.

Set the task height first

For precision work, the hands generally need to operate around a comfortable elbow zone while the eyes maintain visual access. Patient tables and adjustable benches should therefore be positioned before finalizing stool height.

Feet must have somewhere stable to go

At lower heights the floor can provide support. At higher heights a footring or platform becomes essential. Unsupported feet can increase pressure at the seat edge and make the user feel unstable.

Avoid chasing a target angle

Published studies discuss hip and trunk angles, but no single number is appropriate for every body and task. Use angle as a description of posture, not as a medical prescription.

Perform a real-work check

After the initial setup, perform the actual task for ten to fifteen minutes. Look for shoulder elevation, neck flexion, pressure behind the thighs, difficulty reaching controls and repeated sliding forward. Adjust one variable at a time.
