Dental Assistant Ergonomics & Seating Guide

Height, visibility, foot support and four-handed workflow considerations for dental assistants.

Dental assistants have a different ergonomic problem from operators: they often need a higher viewpoint, rapid access to instruments and suction, and frequent repositioning around the patient. A stool that is suitable for the dentist may therefore be wrong for the assistant.

The assistant often needs a higher working position

Assistant seating commonly requires a greater height range to maintain visibility into the oral cavity while preserving access for the operator. A footring becomes important when the feet cannot remain comfortably on the floor.

Visibility without collapsing forward

The aim is to gain viewing height through seat and patient positioning rather than by sustained trunk flexion. The torso should remain stable enough that the arms can perform fine work without the back constantly compensating.

Foot support is part of the seat

At elevated heights, unsupported feet can create pressure and instability. A properly placed footring gives the assistant a reference point and allows position changes around the ring.

Match the stool to the role
