Discuss your requirementRTLS is an architecture, not a single tag. Define whether the hospital needs zone, room or sub-room accuracy; the update frequency; and the clinical action triggered by location before selecting technology.
1. Use case and accuracy
Asset search, geofencing, patient flow and precise clinical location need different accuracy and latency. Avoid buying sub-metre infrastructure for a room-level problem.
2. Technology options
- BLE: common for room or zone location with gateways.
- Wi-Fi: may reuse infrastructure but requires validation.
- Active RFID: battery tags and dedicated readers for location events.
- UWB: higher precision with more infrastructure.
3. Site survey and calibration
Map walls, metal, lifts, equipment density and network points. Test in normal operating conditions and document expected accuracy by zone.
4. Privacy and governance
Separate asset, patient and staff use cases. Apply lawful purpose, consent where required, role-based access, retention, audit and transparent policies.
5. Integration and operations
Define asset identity, map maintenance, alerts, battery replacement, lost-tag response and interfaces to CMMS, nurse call or patient-flow systems.
Pilot principle: Track one asset class in a bounded department and measure location accuracy, latency, false alerts, battery work and user outcomes.
