What Is a Computer on Wheels?

A Computer on Wheels (COW) is a mobile clinical workstation designed to bring computing, documentation and medical equipment directly to the point of care. COW carts allow clinical staff to access patient records, enter data and operate connected devices wherever care is delivered — at the bedside, in the ward, in the OPD or in the ICU.

Depending on the model and configuration, a COW may carry a desktop monitor or all-in-one computer, laptop, keyboard and mouse tray, barcode scanner, printer shelf, medical equipment mounts, storage drawers and a battery power system where the model supports it. Not every cart includes all features — configuration depends on the clinical workflow, department and model selected.

Powered & Battery Workstations

Battery-powered medical workstations are a distinct category for departments requiring cordless operation. These carts carry an integrated battery system that powers the computer, monitor and connected peripherals without a mains connection.

Powered workstation configurations are available with battery and height-adjustment options depending on model and project specification.

Gas-Spring / Sit-Stand Workstations

For smooth, counterbalanced height adjustment, gas-spring workstation options are available on specific models:

  • MCTGW — White sit-stand monitor cart with gas-spring arm and keyboard tray
  • MCTGB — Black mobile monitor workstation with gas-spring arm

Gas-spring height adjustment is available on these specific models only — it is not a feature of the full COW range.
