Amrita Hospital Delhi — RIFE MHS Battery Backup Medical Cart Deployment

The Challenge

Amrita Hospital Delhi was looking to modernise the clinical workstations across their ICU, CCU and general ward departments. The existing setup — small laptop carts with limited screen real estate and no reliable power backup — was creating friction for nursing and clinical staff across multiple departments.

The hospital had three specific requirements that existing solutions in the market were not meeting:

  • Large-screen all-in-one workstation: Clinical staff needed a proper full-size display for EMR, patient data and clinical decision support — not a small laptop screen that required staff to lean in or squint at data during busy ward rounds
  • Full-day battery backup: The hospital needed carts that could operate cordlessly for an entire clinical shift — a minimum of 4–6 hours — before requiring recharge. Carts that needed to be plugged in mid-shift were disrupting workflow and creating cable hazards
  • Electronic height adjustment for all staff: Amrita Hospital has a diverse nursing team with significant variation in height between male and female staff. A fixed-height workstation was ergonomically unsuitable. The hospital required motorised electronic height adjustment so every nurse and clinician could set the cart to their precise working height instantly

Why Amrita Hospital Selected RIFE MHS Carts

After evaluating available options in the Indian market, Amrita Hospital selected the RIFE MHS series for three reasons that directly addressed their requirements:

1. Electronic Height Adjustment

The MHS series features motorised electronic height adjustment — a single button raises or lowers the workstation platform to the precise height required by each individual user. Male and female nursing staff of different heights can each set their preferred working position in seconds, without manual effort or tools. This was a decisive factor for Amrita Hospital’s diverse clinical team.

2. Full-Day Battery Backup

The integrated lithium battery in the MHS rear enclosure provides 4–6 hours of continuous cordless operation under typical clinical device loads — sufficient to cover a full ward round or ICU shift without recharging. At the end of the shift, carts are plugged in at the nursing station overnight and are fully charged and ready for the next day. This eliminated the mid-shift recharging problem entirely and removed trailing power cables from ward and ICU floors.

3. All-in-One Large Screen Workstation

The MHS platform accommodates a full-size all-in-one computer with a large clinical display — giving staff a proper workstation experience at the bedside, not a compromise. EMR navigation, patient data review and clinical documentation are all significantly faster and more comfortable on a large screen compared to a laptop cart.

The Proof of Concept

Before committing to a full deployment, Amrita Hospital conducted a one-month Proof of Concept (POC) with RIFE MHS carts across selected departments. The POC evaluated:

  • Battery runtime under real clinical device loads across full shifts
  • Electronic height adjustment usability across the nursing team
  • Build quality and durability in daily ICU and ward use
  • Staff adoption and workflow integration

At the end of the one-month POC, the clinical and procurement teams at Amrita Hospital were satisfied with the product quality, battery performance and build standard of the RIFE MHS carts. The hospital proceeded with a full deployment of 20+ carts across their clinical departments.

Ongoing Partnership

The relationship between RIFE and Amrita Hospital Delhi has continued beyond the initial deployment. As the hospital has expanded and upgraded its clinical departments, RIFE has continued to supply additional MHS carts — an ongoing partnership built on the performance and reliability demonstrated during the original POC.

Key Outcomes

  • Full-day cordless operation — 4–6 hours battery runtime covering complete clinical shifts without mid-shift recharging
  • Ergonomic workstation for all staff — electronic height adjustment accommodating the full range of male and female nursing staff heights
  • Large-screen clinical workstation at the bedside — replacing inadequate laptop carts with a proper all-in-one display
  • Eliminated cable hazards — cordless operation removed trailing power cables from ICU and ward floors
  • Successful 1-month POC — validated performance before full deployment commitment
  • 20+ carts deployed — across ICU, CCU and general ward departments
  • Ongoing upgrade partnership — continued supply as the hospital expands
